Patterson & Green named Australia's best  25 Oct 2014

South Coast Athletics was in the spot light once again with their High Jumper Eleanor Patterson taking out the Athletics Australia Junior Athlete of the year award at Crown on Thursday Night. Patterson had been nominated for the Female Athlete of the Year Award also, which was won by Javelin thrower, Kimberley Mickle. South Coast Athletics President David Green, the coach of Eleanor Patterson was awarded the Junior Coach of the Year Award. The award caps off a sensational year for Patterson, who claimed her second Open High Jump Australian title, broke the World Youth Record with a leap of 1.96m and who could forget her gold winning performance at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. When asked what winning the award meant Patterson replied, ďIt is certainly a great honour to have all the hard work and time that has been put into the achievements over the years to be recognised." "To be recognised in this manner is amazing in itself but for David to be awarded too is icing on the cake and so well deserving of him. It makes me excited for what the future holds, " she said. Coach David Green has developed Patterson from a young age. ďI certainly understand the effort and commitment Eleanor has put in and what she has sacrificed to get where she is, so it is a well-deserved award," he said. "It certainly hasnít been easy and the amount of time involved and not just the training component has been immense from herĒ. ďIt is a tough being an individual sport and one where if your preparation isnít great it can have a dramatic effect on how you compete and you can be exposed. Eleanor always gives herself the best opportunity to compete well and follows my preparation routine to perfection.Ē David said the local environment and what the area has got to offer for alternative types of training has assisted us immensely, however having no athletic facilities here at Leongatha has made it very hard. "We have had to travel to do what we have to do, as a coach I would like to say my family has been unbelievably supportive and have sacrificed so much over so many years," he said. "Their support has allowed me to spend the time required to prepare the athletes I coach the best I canĒ. ďAthletics doesnít have the exposure or sponsorship of other sports so you have to be self-motivated and willing to sacrifice a lot time wise and financially as a coach and I look back and know this could not have been done without my familyís commitment to the cause and that part you can never be thankful enough forĒ. ďMy family are my biggest supporters and biggest critics at the same time, they keep me honest and on top of things and that part is special really because when you look deeper into it, their contribution has definitely made me a better coach.ď

Saturday was the last round of the XCR, the TAN relays, and we had our best roll up. We managed to get three teams up and the results were easily our best for the year, with both the Menís division 4 and Womenís division 4 teams finishing 5th and the Menís division 7 team finished 22nd. Both the division 4 teams narrowly missed 3rd place. There were some great individual performances with Ed Beischer clearly having the fastest time with a 13.00mins for the 3.827KM course. His 13 year old brother Ben Beischer showed how much he has improved churning out the 3rd best time for the club with a 14.33min performance. In the Womenís event, the girls were very evenly spread with Sarah Lewis churning out the fastest time of 16.26mins. Young Rachael Aitken who is only 12yo had her first run in the XCR and did so in the senior Menís Division 7 team. Her time of 19.17mins was better than many older, more seasoned XCR runners. Many thanks to thank Terra, Carolyn and Danielle for being our 3 officials. We actually had 15 South Coasters in attendance, not just the 12 runners. Thanks ladies, we appreciate your assistance. After the race, 7 of the South Coasters joined for ďa lap of honourĒ. It was nice to see so many of the Blue and Grey singlets together on a lap of the TAN. After the run we ventured to the Botanical gardens for a coffee and cake to celebrate our year. Put the word out amongst your friends for next season as we need to recruit so we can challenge for a flag next year! Sincere thanks to Steve Plumb, our Team Manager for the tireless work he does. His devotion to the Club not only throughout the XCR series but the whole year is commendable.

We had five South Coasters and an invitational runner compete at Albert Park on Sunday. Everyone who ran did well but there were 3 outstanding performances with Ed Beischer finishing 4th overall in the 3km, running a PB by almost 40 seconds with a time of 9.34 min. Hunter Lipscomb, at just 13 years of age had an outstanding run in the 10km to be easily the best South Coast male running a slashing 43.17min. With Langfords and Plumbs away we only managed to get 3 South Coasters to the Brimbank Cross Country. The three Coasters who did turn up ran very well, in particular Sarah Lewis, who again finished well up the order, running the 6KM in just over 4 minute KM pace and finishing just outside the top 50. Hunter improved significantly on his Lardner Park run where he struggled due to illness. He showed us what he can do when fit, running his 4KM at sub 4 minute KM pace and finishing in the top half of the field. And Tim, who makes no secret that he prefers the road to cross Country, gutsed it out over the gruelling 16km to finish just over the 5 minute per km pace.

With 690 of the Stateís best athletes competing at Lardner Park, the South Coast results were outstanding from our nine entrants. Sam took one for the team running the 6KM for the seniors when he was eligible to run the 3KM. A great display of teamwork when you consider it was his first go and he had never run 6KM before. The division 4 men finished 8th out of 11 teams and the division 4 women finished 4th out of 12 teams, while the U16 boys finished 6th out of 16 teams. In an absolutely stunning display of jumping, Eleanor Patterson equalled the World Youth High Jump Record clearing a staggering 1.96m at the Australian All Schools Championships in Townsville on Saturday. The jump, a new personal best performance smashed her own Australian U/18 record that she set in Cairns two weeks ago and also bettered the Australian U/20 record, which previously stood at 1.93m. The 1.96m performance gives Eleanor her second Commonwealth Games ďAĒ qualifier, her third World Junior Championships qualifier and also a World Indoor (senior) Championships qualifier. So significant is the performance Eleanor now moves to the outright World number 1 high jumper for 2013 in the under 20 & under 18 age groups as well as being the number 1 ranked high jumper in the Commonwealth. Furthermore Patterson has now broken the eight Victorian records set a fortnight ago, all over again. In hot and humid conditions Patterson entered the competition at 1.79m clearing with ease, likewise at 1.82m. After her first attempt clearance at 1.85m Patterson had won the competition. Setting the bar at 1.88m Patterson cleared on her first attempt to equal the Australian All Schools meet record. Tiring in the hot conditions it took Eleanor three attempts to clear 1.92m before unleashing a massive leap at 1.94m on her first attempt. The stadium was silent as all eyes were on Patterson, but she wouldíve known, such the concentration. Going through her familiar routine Patterson was fast and strong in her run up before clearing the bar at 1.96m. Eleanor initially thought she had knocked the bar off but when she heard the roar of the crowd and raised her head after landing her expression was that of shock. The bar was raised to 1.98m, the Australian Open record and the Oceania Region record, Patterson missed on her first attempt and was close to clearing on her attempt before failing on her third. The performance was staggering. In her in media interview with Athletics Australia after the competition Patterson was quick to praise her coach, David Green for her continued success. ď Itís all thanks to my coach. I wouldnít be here without him. He has been coaching me for seven years and we are so used to each other. I would call him a friend and itís so great to work with him so closelyĒ, Patterson added. XCR13 Tan Relays  21 Sept 2013

We had 11 runners 7 South Coast and 4 invitational run at the Tan in the TAN relays on Saturday. Melbourne really turned on one of its finest days weather wise. Letís hope she has another on in her for the 13th October. We had 3 teams entered and while everyone did their best, we finished well down the list. Our best performed team was the Bass Coast runners Invitational team of Suzy, Bec and Terra who finished 7th. Glen Ferguson, a friend of Rod McCalls, visiting from NZ ran the best time with a 13.50, while Ed Beischer (14.13) and Kara Landells (14.42) were the only other 2 under the 4 minute per km mark. We must acknowledge the efforts of Rod McCall who was the only runner to compete in all 10 rounds this year. Great effort Rod.

XCR13 Burmley Half Marathon  8 Sept 2013

We only had 4 runners (plus 1 Bass Coaster invite) at the Burnley Half but they all did an outstanding job. In the womenís event, Kara ran her first ever Half marathon and did exceptionally well to finish in 33rd place. Her second top 50 finish in her first season. Having never run a Half marathon before she learned a lot and will take the start at the Melbourne Half marathon with a lot of confidence. Kara also finished 4th in the Country Championship, missing the bronze medal by a mere 8 seconds. This was her second near miss in as many starts finishing a close 4th in the Cross Country, Country championships at Lardner Park at her previous start.Louise was treating this as a bit of a warm up for the marathon next month also had a great run in only her second ever Half marathon taking over 2 minutes off her previous Half Marathon time. One talking point for the girls will be that they ran in a race that was won by Nikki Chapple who last month ran for Australia in the World Championships. So it was a pretty slick field. Justin Tilley took it easy early on as he has only just got back into running in the last few weeks and was still the first South Coaster home. Not far behind Justin was Dean Langford who was only a couple of minutes off his PB and Rod McCall after a bit of a battle early found his rhythm half way through the race to charge home in very convincing style.

XCR13 Lardner Park XC  10 Aug 2013

We only had a small team of 7 runners on Saturday but it was easily our best day of the series so far. Again we were only able to get 1 team up (50 plus Men) but we had some great individual results.Star of the day was Ed Beischer who won the Victorian Country Championship in the U16 Boys 3KM Cross Country. Imigen Langford also had a good day snagging a Victorian Country Championship Bronze medal in the U16 Girls 3KM Cross Country.Hard luck story of the day went to Kara Landells who went so close to a medal finishing 4th in the Victorian Country Championship for the Open Womens 4KM Cross Country. Kara was only 9 seconds behind the 3rd place getter. Dean, Rod and Tim all put in strong runs in the Mens 8KM.

XCR13 Albert Park Road Race  28 July 2013

We had few athletes competing but those who did run well and did the club proud. Mark Coulter and Dean Langford battled it out for the title of fastest South Coaster with Mark getting home by a mere second over his much older team mate. Tim and Rod had a good battle as well with Tim using his local knowledge to hold Rod out by 30 seconds. incere thanks to Terra, Sarah, Kara and Imi for doing the officiating duties. Results as follows: 3KM Imigen Langford 12.13min 18th U16 Girls, 10KM: Mark Coulter 38.38min 231st overall 168th Open Mens, Dean Langford 38.39min 232nd overall 18th 50-54 Mens, Tim Crosbie 41.54m 327th overall 29th 50-54 Mens, Rod McCall 42.24min 342nd overall 41st 45-49 Mens, Steve Plumb 47.20min 397th overall 43rd 50-54 Mens. Eleanor Patterson crowned World Youth Champion  16 July 2013

Congratulations to South Coast athlete, Eleanor Patterson on winning the Women's High Jump at the World Youth Championships in Ukraine last Friday. Eleanor entered the competition as the favourite with a World Youth lead performance of 1.86m. Unlike many of the no.1 ranked athletes who failed during these Championships, Patterson was composed and focussed from the outset. Under instruction from her coach, David Green Eleanor took one jump in hot conditions during the qualifying competition to secure her place in the final which was held two days later. With fresh legs Patterson was the last competitor to enter the competition in the final, coming in at 1.79m. Her clearance was huge and I can remember one of an Australian Throw's Coach saying, "I can see daylight", referring to the clearance between Patterson and the bar. The same comment was made at her 1.82m attempt. So dominant was Patterson that she had won the competition after her second jump. Eleanor went on to clear heights at 1.85m and 1.88m before stumbling at 1.91m. This 6cm thrashing equalled the greatest ever winning margin in a High Jump competition at the World Youth Championships. What a wonderful achievement Eleanor, the Club is so proud of you!. Coach David Green has once again prepared Patterson to perfection, always peaking at every major competition she has competed in. Everyone around the club knows how much time & effort he commits not only to this great club but to Eleanor and all the athletes in his squad. World Youth Champion Coach is yet another title to add to his growing list of achievements. Congratulations to you both.
